TITLE:
MRI Basic Principles and Applications

Description
Synopsis

This guide for radiology technologists seeks to balance theoretical coverage with instructions for implementation with commercial scanners. The book covers fundamental topics like net magnetization and magnetic resonance, and then provides an overview of pivotal areas, such as imaging techniques, hardware, and applications. Advanced mathematics are kept to a minimum, and illustrations clarify technical concepts. Brown teaches at Siemens Training and Development Center; Semelka teaches radiology at the U. of North Carolina School of Medicine. Annotation ©2003 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR
Annotation

The book contains black-and-white illustrations.
Acta Radiologica

...a nice introduction to this field. For anyone thinking of buying a book about basic MR imaging, why not buy this one?

Review:
From the Publisher

This new edition of the most accessible introduction to MRI principles and applications provides understandable yet comprehensive coverage including the latest developments in this fast paced field. It offers the only such concise overview of magnetic resonance physics, imaging techniques, hardware, and applications available. This Third Edition includes dozens of brand new images to support the text, as well as added discussions on 3D imaging, real time imaging, cardiac imaging, and parallel acquisition techniques. Clinical protocols have been thoroughly updated and revised to reflect current methodologies.

Amy Herlihy

This book discusses the basics of MRI, pulse sequences, and hardware requirements. The purpose is to give the reader a basic overview of MR physics, imaging techniques, and hardware. Targeted at a broad audience, the authors present the ideas clearly, avoiding the more difficult math and physics aspects. This book would be ideally suited to technicians and radiologists who are new to MRI and to radiology residents. I would recommend this to MRI graduate students as a first-semester reading. Although nicely presented, this book is short on some figures. It could use a graphical explanation of gradient echoes, sequence timing, and gradient lobe usage. MR images are not always easy to reproduce, but some figures could be drastically improved. The demonstration of wrap-around (or frequency undersampling) could be better. The abundance of pulse sequence diagrams is quite useful. Given the speed at which the field of MRI evolves, up-to-date information is important. This book does a nice job of discussing the major points of MRI, presenting current imaging techniques and hardware considerations. Although there are several such books out, this is a simple, easily readable book that covers all aspects of MRI, from the basic physics, to specific pulse sequences, to hardware requirements.

Reviewer: William R. Hendee, PhD (Medical College of Wisconsin)
Description: This is the third edition of an introduction to the research, technology, and clinical applications of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) that has become standard reading material for radiology residents. The second edition was published in 1999 and the first edition in 1995.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide readers with the knowledge of the tools needed to assess various MRI modalities and to understand and apply the contrast mechanisms inherent in any of the modalities. This information is an essential ingredient in the education of any radiologist. The book meets its objectives very well.
Audience: The primary audience for this book is radiology residents and the book has become standard for residents in training programs across the nation. However, it serves well as an introductory book for anyone wishing to learn about MRI. Certainly, the authors are recognized authors in the field.
Features: The book provides an introduction to the science and technology of magnetic resonance imaging, enabling in-depth assessment of contrast enhancement mechanisms. A final chapter on clinical applications is reinforced by clinical images throughout the book. The authors write well and have chosen their examples very well.
Assessment: This book is a very well written book and has wonderful illustrations of technical principles, many of which are clinical images. New editions every four years might seem to be excessively frequent, but the field of magnetic resonance imaging is changing quickly, both technically and clinically.
Booknews

Presents the core concepts of magnetic resonance imaging for clinicians and technologists who might not have an extensive background in physics. Discusses basic physics of MRI, the hardware used in MRI systems, and the issues involved in developing imaging protocols, and gives an overview of the guiding principles for the clinical application of MRI. Topics include: pulse sequences, artifacts, fat suppression techniques, MR angiography, and contrast agents. Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
